A little more about biodiversity

Biodiversity is the natural world around us, and the variety of all the different living organisms it contains, wherever they come from, both on land and in water, and also covers the ecosystems that these organisms are an integral part of. It spans diversity within species, between species and inside ecosystems.

As much as 90 per cent of life on land can be found in our forests. Forests maintain balance in the atmosphere, regulate the climate, scrub clean the air we breathe, and play an essential role in the water cycle. But, as Sara told us, an estimated half of the earth’s forests have disappeared and most of that has taken place during the last 50 years. And the reason a lot of the forest has been lost has to do with our food production.
